This Week in Add-on Superdelegates (w/poll)

Sun May 25, 2008 at 08:27:18 PM PDT

The only add-on superdelegate to be chosen this week is on June 1 (Maine, already promised to Obama who won the caucus there by 19.6%.)  Unless more undeclared add-ons speak up, this is it until after Saturday's DNC Rules Committee meeting.  To date, 46 of the 76 add-on superdelegates have been chosen.

At the beginning of this week, Obama was leading in add-on superdelegates:

       Obama - 21     Clinton - 14      Undeclared - 6

Add-ons Chosen This Week

  1. Alaska (May 23, Friday) - State Convention.  Former Governor Tony Knowles for Obama:

  1. Georgia (May 24, Saturday) - 2 at State Committee.  I was thinking/hoping they'd both go for Obama, because he won the primary big - 68.1% to 31.9%.  But they split, with Verna Cleveland for Hillary and Stephen Leeds for Obama (no picture found).  Nonetheless, one each is more advantageous to Obama than Clinton, who is running behind.  Leeds was an early Edwards supporter who switched over to Obama.
  1. Wyoming (May 24, Saturday) - State Convention.  As predicted, this one went for Obama.  Meet Patrick Goggles:

  1. Hawaii (May 25, Sunday) - State Party Committee.  Note:  The two vacancies in the state party, both superdelegates, have also been filled by Obama supporters.   All three: Chairman Brian Schatz, Vice-Chair Kari Luna, and add-on superdelegate retired Judge James Burns were endorsed by Senator Obama.

  Schatz:

Kari Luna:

UNDECLARED ADD-ONS
Last Monday, I made predictions for the six as-yet-undeclared add-ons.  Some of them declared this week, and my predictions held up.

  1. Massachusetts - Martha May Coakley for Clinton (as predicted)
  1. Ohio - William Bashien for Clinton (as predicted)

So the add-on superdelegate tally as of today is:

       Obama - 25    Clinton - 17     Undeclared - 4

These are still undeclared.  This week, I'm guessing - totally guessing - that McAllister (Nevada)  will endorse as I predicted last week.  So now I'm predicting timing as well as preference:

  1. Arizona - Terry Goddard (Prediction: Obama)
  1. Missouri - Jay Nixon (Prediction: Obama)
  1. Nevada - Rusty McAllister (Prediction: Obama) [Note: McAllister caucused for Obama.]
  1. Tennessee - Jerry Lee (Prediction: Obama)  [Note:  Tennessee's other add-on has declared for Hillary.]

Of these four, I predict that McAllister will endorse for Obama this week, when the Senator is scheduled for campaign stops in Nevada.

NEXT WEEK
The only action in predictions next week regards Maine's single add-on, to be chosen at the State Convention on Sunday, June 1.  I predict that Maine's gonna do what they said they would.  Prediction:  Obama

Here's what I anticipate for the add-on superdelegate situation at the end of the week.  There are 29 more add-ons to be selected after Maine:

     Obama - 27     Clinton - 17     Undeclared - 3

The only primary, in Puerto Rico, is also scheduled for Sunday, June 1.  The big primary season event for the week will be the DNC Rules Committee meeting.  Which could turn out to be an anti-climax.  The Committee may hear the arguments, but not issue a decision at the meeting.  In fact, my guess is that they will not make their ruling until after the Montana and South Dakota primaries on June 3.  The only delegate action before that this week will be endorsements by previously undeclared superdelegates.  So that will be the subject of this diary's poll.  Though the situation has more permutations and combinations than there are poll options.  So, if you want something else, just add it in the comments.
